What Is The Driving Theory Test?
The Driving Theory Test is administered by the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), the government body responsible for driver education. This computer-based test evaluates your knowledge of road rules, traffic signs, and safe driving practices.
As a learner driver, you must pass the theory test before booking your practical driving test.
About The Driving Theory Test
The Driving Theory Test consists of two sections: a multiple-choice test and a hazard perception test. You must pass both sections to succeed.
Multiple-Choice Test
This section includes 50 questions about the Highway Code. Before starting, you’ll receive instructions and have a chance to try a practice question.
Hazard Perception Test
This section features 14 video clips showing different road scenarios. You need to identify developing hazards quickly using a mouse click. A developing hazard requires you to take action, such as changing speed or direction. There are 15 hazards in total, and you can score up to five points for each if you respond promptly. Before starting, you’ll watch a video explaining how this test works.

Pass Requirements
If you fail one part of the test, you’ll need to retake both sections. Additionally, there is a mandatory 3-working-day waiting period before retaking the test.
Multiple-Choice Test
You must correctly answer at least 43 out of 50 questions.
Hazard Perception Test
You must score at least 44 out of 75 points.
Here’s a general guideline for effective revision:
Start
Early
Begin at least 8-10 weeks before your test to cover all topics thoroughly without feeling rushed.
Daily
Dedication
Spend 20-30 minutes daily on your revision. This consistent effort helps retain information and reduces last-minute stress. Even 15 minutes a day can be effective if you start early.
Mock Test
Assessments
After 4 weeks, take a mock test to evaluate your readiness and identify areas needing more focus. Continue with weekly mock tests as your test date nears to build confidence and improve time management.
Avoid
Cramming
Resist the urge to cram information in the final days before your test. Instead, focus on rest and relaxation to ensure you're in top form on test day.
Success in your driving theory test requires timely revision, consistent practice, and effective strategies.

How To Prepare For Your Theory Test
Many people assume the theory test is easy, but pass rates have fallen in recent years. In 2022, over 50% of theory tests ended in failure, leading to wasted time and money for learners.
To increase your chances of passing on the first try, it’s crucial to practice thoroughly. Our friendly instructors will assist with your theory training during lessons to ensure you have the necessary knowledge.
Additionally, read The Highway Code (available online) and study ‘The Official DVSA Guide to Driving – The Essential Skills,’ available in most bookstore. Please call for advise and guidance and how to source online literature.

What to Expect on the Day of Your Theory Test
Arrive at the test center about 15 minutes before your scheduled test time. Bring your provisional driving license for check-in and to access a designated locker for storing your (switched off) mobile phone.
Remember to bring your provisional license. Without it, you won’t be allowed to take the test, and your fee will be forfeited.
After signing in, you’ll receive a document outlining the test rules. Once you acknowledge these rules, you’ll be directed to a computer where you can opt for a 15-minute practice session. This practice is recommended to help you get comfortable with the computer and the test center environment.
The test begins with multiple-choice questions. Select the correct answer from the options provided. If uncertain about a question, you can flag it and return to it later. You can also review and change your answers as needed.
Next is the hazard perception test. Here, you will identify developing hazards in video clips using your mouse. You get only one attempt per video and cannot review or change your answers.
After completing all parts of the test, you’ll receive your results at the test center.
If you have your theory test coming up, we wish you the best of luck!
